Why a protector is not optional

Almost every mattress warranty in the industry, ours included, is voided by staining. Not by wear, not by softening — by a visible stain. A single spilled glass of water, a sick kid, or an unlucky night can end a ten-year warranty on a mattress that is otherwise perfectly fine. A protector is the cheapest insurance in the bedroom, and it is the one accessory we recommend adding on night one rather than later.

The second reason is biological. A mattress absorbs roughly a liter of moisture per person per week through ordinary perspiration, along with skin cells that feed dust mites. A waterproof barrier stops all of that at the surface, where it can go in the wash, instead of letting it settle into the foam and coil layers where it cannot be cleaned.

The problem with most waterproof protectors

The cheap ones are vinyl. Vinyl is genuinely waterproof and genuinely awful to sleep on: it crinkles with every movement, it is a complete vapor barrier, and it turns a breathable mattress into a sealed one. People buy them, sleep hot for a week, take them off, and conclude protectors are a bad idea.

The Ice protector uses a thermoplastic polyurethane membrane instead. TPU is waterproof to liquid but permeable to water vapor, so body moisture still passes through and evaporates. It is laminated to a knit face rather than a plastic sheet, so there is no crinkle — the surface moves and sounds like fabric because it is fabric.

  • Cool-to-the-touch knit face with a genuine drop in surface temperature
  • 100% waterproof breathable TPU membrane
  • Silent — no crinkle, no plastic hand feel
  • Blocks dust mites, allergens, and stains
  • 18-inch deep pocket with an elasticized skirt
  • Machine washable and dryer safe on low

Protector, encasement, or pad?

These three products are frequently confused and do different jobs. A protector is a fitted sheet-style layer that covers the top and sides, and it is what most people need. An encasement zips around all six sides and is the right choice specifically for bed bug or severe allergy management. A mattress pad adds cushioning or warmth and usually offers little or no liquid protection — it is a comfort item, not a protective one.

Care and replacement

  • Wash every one to two months, or immediately after any spill
  • Cold or warm water, mild detergent, no bleach
  • Tumble dry low — high heat degrades the TPU membrane over time
  • No ironing and no dry cleaning
  • Expect three to five years of life with regular washing

Sleepers who run warm most often mention waking without the heavy, overheated feeling they had on their previous mattress.

The first mattress that actually sleeps cool for me.
No more kicking the covers off at 2am — the surface just doesn't hold heat.

Questions, answered

Will a waterproof protector make me sleep hot?+

A vinyl one will. This one uses a breathable TPU membrane laminated to a cool-touch knit, so water vapor still escapes and the surface reads cool on first contact. It is designed specifically not to undo the airflow of a hybrid mattress.

Does it crinkle?+

No. The face is knit fabric, not plastic sheeting, so it moves silently. Crinkle is the signature of a vinyl-backed protector.

Do I need one to keep my mattress warranty?+

Warranties are voided by staining, so a protector is the practical way to keep yours intact. We strongly recommend using one from the first night.

Will it fit a thick mattress?+

The skirt is built for mattresses up to 18 inches deep, which covers the LINDEN mattress with room for a topper.

How often should I wash it?+

Every one to two months under normal use, and right away after any spill. Cold or warm wash, tumble dry low — high heat is the main thing that shortens a TPU membrane's life.

Can I use it on an adjustable base?+

Yes. The elasticized skirt flexes with the mattress as the base articulates.
